Some Fall Frames

I finally went back to school to finish my last quarter of school this fall. Here are a few frames from one of the stories I worked on. Meet the Nolans from Gallipolis, Ohio, a family whose farming roots date back to the Civil War era. After the current father Nick was laid off from his manufacturing job, he decided to return to his family's farm and make a living that way and keep the family's farming tradition going.

I spent the day in Annapolis, Md. on Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy Induction Day for all the first year students, called Plebes. My original plan was to follow a local kid through the day, and hopefully follow him throughout the summer-long training program. But, it's the Academy's policy to not allow stories of individuals due to the potentially stressful experience they may have. So I made what I could of the day. It's a bit of a distant take and nothing too personal, but it was a fun shoot nonetheless.

It's been a flurry of last minute legislative wheeling and dealing in the lame duck Congress. Below are photos from Obama's tax deal, the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, the DREAM Act, New Start Treaty, and the NY Senators on the 9/11 first responders bill. Also, the president squeezed in time to read to school children and wish them a Merry Christmas.

After 3 and a half months at the Palm Beach Post in Florida, I'm back home in Ohio for a couple weeks before heading to DC for 8 months.

I worked on a story about a man named Daniel, who was on the Waiting List for a heart transplant. He has a wonderful family and I'm thankful he opened his life to me. Below is a one of my favorite frames I made of him and his wife.

You can see the full story (edit subject to change a bit) on my portfolio site. It's running as a photo page with a story in Sunday's Palm Beach Post, so I'll post a tearsheet when I get the PDFs. Big thanks to PBPost editors Mark Edelson and Greg Lovett for their encouragement and editing help. And a big thanks to David Lee, friend and founder of the Waiting List website and non-profit group. Eventually, a multimedia piece will be posted to that site. The site is still in soft launch mode and we hope to add many more stories to it in the future and help to spread the word about the need for more organ donors in the United States.

I also am working on a gallery called "Place to Place." Only a few photos up now, but will add to it in the coming week. Inspired by my buddies Charles, Andy and Sam's artistic personal photos on their sites, I decided to create a section for my "pretty pictures" that I like from my trips, travels and assignments over the past year or so.

Was hoping to get some behind the scenes stuff beforehand, but the models arrived at the place with hair and makeup already done. Waited 2.5 hours for the models to arrive, and then the whole thing was over in less than 10 minutes.

Wednesday was Rodeo night at the fair. I only shot about 20 frames with my digital camera, then ripped through a few rolls of film on my Diana for a small project I've been working on all through fair week.

Day 2 at the Fair

Had to shoot "big time wrestling" at the fair on Monday night. Prior to the event starting, the promoter took the microphone and yielded the quote of the night with this gem:

"I just want to let you all know, this is being broadcast live in the UK, so you will be all over TV in Canada."

This last photo of the 3 wrestling pictures is the kind of thing I'd rather have been shooting the whole time. The PR people for the wrestling group were being really stingy with what they wanted to show. Why can't we just cut the bull crap and be real people? Why does everything have to be staged? Every time I went around back to the trailer to hang out with them in between matches while they hung out or changed outfits or had a smoke break, I was instantly shooed away by the promotions people. "We don't want to show that. Get outta here. You can get great shots out by the ring." What's the point of photographing the event as everyone already sees it? Everyone knows this is all fake anyway, why can't I show them being real people? Frustrating. The wrestlers were cool with me being around, but the PR people were all over me. Same thing happened at a concert I had to photograph last night. "You must stand in this little 4 square foot corner and take all your pictures from here." Can I go backstage during the rain delay and photograph the bands bumming around while they wait for the storm to stop? "No."

Here are some other random fair photos from the night. One of these days, I hope something great happens in this nice light that keeps popping up. I would have stuck around longer, but had to head over to the wrestling.

I've also been carrying around my Diana camera and shooting a roll of film each day out there, so hopefully I'll have something to show for that by Sunday or Monday.

I was riding in the back of the pace car in the 2nd picture, where an old couple talked to me about their favorite restaurants to eat breakfast at. Apparently "Tony's" has an omelette to die for.

There were some really nice pockets of light coming into the building where they were setting up, but I couldn't get anyone to walk into it how I wanted to see it.

For the past few months I've spent the wee hours of the morning recording music. It's great to totally lose track of time and get lost in the recording process in the middle of the night. Some of these songs are completely new and some of them are older bits and pieces that I shaped into new songs. It's a collection of 10 songs - some are stark piano-based songs and others have a lot more sounds and noises going on. I sing on most of them and 2 of them are covers. Swing and a Miss

Had to shoot swing dancing at the antique festival in Midland on Saturday.

Here is some swing...

...and here is the miss.

The seas parted on the dance floor and for a minute, these 2 were the only ones out there. And all the people standing outside of the barn cleared out and left the yellow background wide open for me to silhouette these 2 against. And I blew it. 2 steps to the right and we may have had a winner. After realizing my mistake, people moved back into the frame and into the background and my scene was gone. Maybe next time?

Bizarro Tennis

On Saturday, I had to go to the Midland Tennis Center to photograph a kiddie birthday party for a story about parents trying to provide more active birthday parties for children.

I also happened upon the last picture while at the party. Midland is trying to be named "Tennis Town USA" and this week they have been doing a 24/7 tennis marathon where they are making sure at least 2 people are playing tennis at all times at the center. The guy laying on the ground down there had just finished playing a 12 hour shift.

Some minor league baseball. The sports season never ends at newspapers, but thankfully here in Midland they don't seem to cover the local minor league team much, which is fine by me.
